St. Magnus

The hand engraved, black stained glass panels on this mirror, are a symbol that is carved into the walls of Orkney’s beautiful St. Magnus Cathedral. It is one of three symbols carved into the walls to honour the three founders of the Cathedral. The frame for this mirror is made from Parana Pine, a timber that is now hard to source, due to previous over harvesting. We were lucky to source this piece from a retiring, local furniture maker.

Endrborinn

Usually when we make a piece of furniture we remove the cut marks that the chainsaw leaves when the tree is felled. However, for this mirror, these marks are a feature and have inspired the name. “Endrborinn" is an old Norse word for born again and these cut marks represent the point in time where the tree started to be born again, the point that is started to change from a tree to becoming a piece of furniture.

Slice in Time

This unique, contemporary clock is made from a slice of Burr Elm; a timber much sought after for it’s unique visual character and rarity. This clock not only tells the time but it also tells a chapter of the tree’s life story.

Double Topped Nest of Stools

Made up of a bench style seat and two traditional seagrass topped stools that slide effortlessly into a nesting place underneath. This piece features hand woven seagrass tops that are not only visually beautiful but offer comfort to the sitter. A very practical piece of furniture offering additional seating for when guests arrive.

A Fingerprint of Nature

This slice of Scottish Oak details the life of this tree. It shows the difference in the seasons of the trees life, which was over one hundred years. The slice has been charred and filled with brass and is now reminiscent of a fingerprint. The slice has been bound together using a bent strip of Ash which is held in place with brass studs.

Cata

Made in collaboration with Orcadian designer, Kirsteen Stewart, this footstool combines Kirsteen’s designer fabric with my furniture design for a stunning and unique piece. Cata is named after Cata Sands in Sanday, Orkney. The fabric design is reminiscent of the pattern left behind on the sand when the tide goes out.
